The education and employment of women

Description

About this book

"The Education and Employment of Women" by Josephine Elizabeth Grey Butler is a substantive social critique written in the late 19th century. This book serves as both a socio-political commentary and a call to action regarding the education and employment opportunities for women. Butler explores the pressing issues women faced during her time, asserting that societal conventions have not kept pace with the changing economic realities of women's lives. In her work, Butler emphasizes that a significant number of women—wives, widows, and spinsters—were economically active yet faced debilitating social prejudice. She presents statistical evidence to illustrate the harsh realities of women's economic dependence and the limited opportunities available to them, primarily teaching, domestic service, and sewing. Through poignant anecdotes and rational argumentation, Butler critiques the status quo, voices the struggles of educators, particularly governesses, and advocates for improved education and employment opportunities for women.
