About this book
"A Military Dictionary: or, Explanation of the Several Systems of Discipline of Different Kinds of Troops" by William Duane is a comprehensive military reference published in the early 19th century. This work serves as a guide to military terminology, principles of fortification, and the various strategies employed in the disciplines of infantry, artillery, and cavalry. It also provides insights into American military regulations and modern tactical improvements, making it particularly relevant for military institutions and educators in the United States. At the start of the text, Duane outlines the necessity for a thorough understanding of military science, especially in light of past failures and misconceptions prevalent in American military practices. He discusses the decline of military knowledge and the inadequacies of existing instructional texts, emphasizing how this has contributed to a poorly organized militia.
